2 Samuel 22:1-30
Q.1. What prompted David to write this song? Why did he conclude that the Lord saves? How did God intervene? – (2 Sam.22:1-16)
We are told that David – spoke the words of this song to the Lord in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul (2 Sam.22:1). This Psalm is almost identical to Psalm 18, written after David had established his reign over the pagan nations. The song summarizes the many dangerous trials that David faced – 5 For the waves of death encompassed me; The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me; 6 The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. 7 In my distress I called upon the Lord, yes, I cried to my God; And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help came into His ears (2 Sam.22:5-7). Out of these repeated dangers, the Lord delivered David, so that he could say – 2 … The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My Saviour, You save me from violence. 4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies (2 Sam.22:2-4). David testified of the Lord’s supernatural interventions, such as thunder, earthquakes, darkness, winds, and floods (2 Sam.22:8-16). It was obvious to him that his kingdom had been established because of God’s special care for him.
Q.2. How often did the Lord deliver David? Why did God take care of him? What difference did God make to David? – (2 Sam.22:17-30)
David recorded that the Lord delivered him from many and varied trials (2 Sam.22:17-19 c.f. 2 Sam.22:1, 5-6). He was conscious of his divine call and believed that – He rescued me because He delighted in me (2 Sam.22:20). David did not take God’s support for granted, but at all times sought to live life in a way that pleased the Lord – 22 “For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not acted wickedly against my God. 23 “For all His ordinances were before me, and as for His statutes, I did not depart from them. 24 “I was also blameless toward Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity (2 Sam.22:22-24). He could therefore say – 21 “The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me … 25 “Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before His eyes (2 Sam.22:21 & 25). David understood that – 26 “With the kind You show Yourself kind; With the blameless You show Yourself blameless; 27 With the pure You show Yourself pure; And with the perverted You show Yourself astute. 28 “And You save an afflicted people; But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You bring low (2 Sam.22:26-28). He feared God above everything else. This was the source of his confidence, no matter how great the opposition – 29 “For You are my lamp, O Lord; The Lord illumines my darkness. 30 “For by You I can run upon a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall (2 Sam.22:29-30).
