Proverbs 14:1-12Â
Q.1. What characterizes a wise woman? What attitude to God brings blessing? Why should we take care in what we say? – (Prov.14:1-6)
A wise woman builds up her house, but a foolish woman tears it down (Prov.14:1). How would anyone tear down their own house? By failing to control their thoughts, words, deeds, and passions. The way to gain wisdom and God’s blessing, is to fear Him above the opinions and approval of others (Prov.14:2 c.f. Ps.111:10; Prov.1:7; 9:10; 15:33). Fearing God will influence or speech and actions and – the lips of the wise will protect them (Prov.14:3). Solomon observed the consequences for scoffers and false witnesses and saw the benefits of speaking the truth (Prov.14:3, 5-6).
Q.2. Why should we avoid the influence of fools? Can others empathize with our circumstances? Why should we consider consequences? – (Prov.14:7-12)
Solomon warned about the negative influence of fools who usually contradict the truth, because – fools mock at sin … whereas – the wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way namely, how things work (Prov.14:7-9). Ultimately, few people will understand your circumstances as you do, since – the heart knows its own bitterness and a stranger does not share its joy (Prov.14:10). God declared that – the house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish (Prov.14:11). Only God factors in all the complexities of life. Though – there is a way which seems right to a man, its end is the way of death (Prov.14:12).
