1 Peter 5:1-7
Q.1. How did Peter see himself as an apostle, and witness of Christ? What is one of the key functions of those called to lead? What attitude should leaders demonstrate? – (1 Pet.5:1-3)
Peter was the spokesman for the apostles of Jesus. He had grown in grace, and saw himself in more modest terms – I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed … (1 Pet.5:1). He was a fellow elder. Leaders in the world generally see themselves as above the rest. Peter exhorted leaders to fulfill the role of a shepherd over the flock of God – shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness (1 Pet.5:2). Elders should lead with eagerness, over all who have been entrusted to their charge and care. They should be kind and gentle leaders and avoid seeking personal gain or fame.
Q.2. What is the primary way a shepherd should lead the flock? What is the reward promised to faithful shepherds? When will the Chief Shepherd reward leaders? – (1 Pet.5:3-4)
Elders are to lead by modelling and by proving to be examples of mature followers of Christ – nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge but proving to be examples to the flock (1 Pet.5:3). A special crown is promised to faithful shepherds – And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory (1 Pet.5:4). However, this reward will not be bestowed until Christ appears in glory.
Q.3. After whom should younger men model themselves? What makes humility crucial? How can we attract God’s grace? What makes God so dependable? – (1 Pet.5:5-7)
Peter immediately followed his advice to elders and older men by giving instructions to younger men. The main quality we all must develop is humility. That is to be expressed in submitting to the leadership of the eldership – You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (1 Pet.5:5). Sooner or later, humility will attract God’s grace. Arrogance and pride will result in opposition from God – Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time (1 Pet.5:6). We need never be afraid to trust God and to place ourselves under His authority – casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you (1 Pet.5:7). No one understands or cares for us as much as Jesus. He is a good God.
