DAVID EXPRESSES WONDER AT THE WAY GOD CARES FOR HIM.

Psalm 144:1-15

Q.1. What gave David success over his enemies? How did God prove His miracle-working power in his life? What impact did God’s intimate care make on the king? – Ps.144:1-7)

David acknowledged that God not only delivered and protected him, but actually gave him skill in battle (Ps.144:1-2, 5-7 c.f. 2 Sam.5:17-25). This still applies to us today. However, it now applies to spiritual warfare. David was filled with wonder, that a mortal man living such a fleeting life could be so highly regarded by God – O Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You think of him? (Ps.144:3). The writer to the Hebrews applied this to the high calling of sonship that God has given to sinners on account of Christ – We do see Him who was made a little while lower than the angels, namely Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone (Heb.2:9 c.f. verses 5-18). If such intimate care touched David, how much more should we wonder at the undeserved grace of God.

Q.2. Why did David need discernment in dealing with his opponents? What gave him confidence to make such requests on behalf of his family and people? – (Ps.144:7-15 c.f. Dt.28:1-14)

We all know the difficulty of dealing with the treachery of terrorists. David was faced with similar deceit and falsehood (Ps.144:7-11). He maintained his courage by keeping his focus on his almighty God. He cheered his spirits by composing fresh new songs of praise and thanksgiving (Ps.144:9). He saw a vision of success and fruitfulness for his family and the nation. He could do this because he held to a high view of God – How blessed are the people who are so situated; How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord! (Ps.144:15).
