A TRIBUTE TO TIMOTHY AND EPAPHRODITUS.

Philippians 2:19-30

Q.1. What was special about Timothy? How will the church benefit if we cultivate a similar heart? – (Phil.2:19-23)

Timothy was a wonderful follower of Paul, though he lacked confidence (c.f. 2 Tim.1:7). Others sought after their own interests. However, Paul testified of Timothy – I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare (Phil.2:20). Paul was able to testify – You know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father (Phil.2:22). The best way to both unify the church, and also earn the right to be heard and have input, is to develop a kindred spirit. Paul could totally trust Timothy to represent him (Phil.2:23).

Q.2. What information did Paul give the Philippians about Epaphroditus? In what way was his contribution to God’s work an example to us? – (Phil.2:25-30)

What a commendation! Paul called Epaphroditus – my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier … messenger and minister (Phil.2:25). Even the Philippian church was concerned when Epaphroditus became ill (Phil.2:26-27). He was an outstanding co-worker. This was demonstrated by his actions – because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life … (Phil.2:30). Though different from Timothy, Epaphroditus could be completely trusted by Paul, who urged – Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard (Phil.2:29). Epaphroditus was a wonderful example of selfless service to Paul and to Christ.
