CAUTIONS FOR THE OPINIONATED, BLUDGER, AND MEDDLER.

Proverbs 26:12-19

Q.1. Why should we maintain caution about our own views and opinions? Why should we be open to the perspectives of others? – (Prov.26:12 c.f. Prov.1:5-7)

Paul advised the Romans – For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith (Rom.12:3). We should keep our own views in perspective and welcome the input of others – A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel (Prov.1:5). Ultimately, we should always maintain a healthy respect for God and place His Word above all others, since – the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction (Prov.1:7).

Q.2. What are some of the negative characteristics of a sluggard and bludger? What was the challenge the writer gave? – (Prov.26:12-16)

A bludger is hard to change because he thinks more highly of himself than he ought to think. The sluggard is careless and misleading in his speech. The bludger is unproductive and lazy – The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can give a discreet answer (Prov.26:16). The writer underscored the value of humility, integrity, and a healthy work ethic.

Q.3. How did the writer underscore the foolishness of meddling? How did he urge caution regarding careless comments? – (Prov.26:17-19 c.f. Mt.12:36)

A dog has sensitive ears and is likely to bite those who pull at them (or blow in his face). It is very unwise to tease a dog. It is also unwise, to be the person – … who passes by and meddles with strife not belonging to him (Prov.26:17). Another foolish pastime is to use words to trick and deceive – 4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks … 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience (Eph.5:4 & 6). Jesus warned – 36 But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Mt.12:36).
