DAVID DEPENDS ON GOD TO SAVE HIM FROM THE ATTACKS OF HIS ENEMIES.

Psalm 55:1-23

Q.1. Why did David cry out to God? How was he being treated by his opponents? Did David believe they could carry out their threats? What was his longing? What was his request from God? – (Ps.55:1-11)

David was restless and distracted – because of the voice of the enemy, because of the pressure of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me and in anger they bear a grudge against me (Ps.55:3). His life was under threat as he uttered cries like that of the Saviour on the Cross – 4 My heart is in anguish within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. 5 Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me (Ps.55:4-5). He longed to escape from his never-ending trials – 6 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. 7 “Behold, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness (Ps.55:6-7). There may be times when we all feel we would like to escape from our circumstances and responsibilities. David prayed that his enemies would fail and be utterly confounded. However, he left the decision to God (Ps.55:9-11).

Q.2. What was so hurtful about Saul’s attacks against David? How is this a Messianic prophecy? What was David’s assurance in the trial? Would God recompense the wicked? On what promise did he rely? – (Ps.55:12-23)

What made his trials so unbearable was the fact that these attacks came from a close friend. This is a clear prophecy about Christ’s betrayal by one of the Twelve apostles (Mt.26:14-16, 20-25, 47-50). David was in deep pain as he explained – 12 For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, then I could hide myself from him. 13 But it is you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friend; 14 We who had sweet fellowship together walked in the house of God in the throng (Ps.55:12-14). David called on God to treat his enemies the way they had treated him (Ps.55:15 & 23 c.f. Rom.12:14-21). Yet through it all, David maintained his confidence in God – 16 As for me, I shall call upon God, and the Lord will save me. 17 … He will hear my voice. 18 He will redeem my soul in peace from the battle, which is against me, for they are many who strive with me. David was also convinced that God would hear his prayer and recompense his enemies: 19 God will hear and answer them — Even the one who sits enthroned from of old … With whom there is no change and will punish those who do not fear God (Ps.55:16-19). David had lots of trials. However, he constantly took his burdens and pain before the Lord. That was because he was convinced that whenever you – Cast your burden upon the Lord that He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (Ps.55:22). God is the ultimate defence against fear and despair.
