DAVID PREPARES THE MATERIALS AND HIS SON TO BUILD THE TEMPLE.

1 Chronicles 22:1-19

Q.1. What was David’s reason for making preparations for such a magnificent Temple? – (1 Chr.22:1-5)

David made some big mistakes in his senior years. His sin with Bathsheba, and shameful cover-up by having her husband killed in battle, are well known. His pride also caused him to number the size of his army. However, the encouraging thing is how he ended. He was about to hand the baton on to his young and inexperienced son, Solomon.  David sought to use his own experience and influence to make extensive preparations for the building of a Temple for his God, that would be recognized amongst the nations.

Q.2. What was the reason why David did not build the temple? Why did David amass such a large quantity of materials? – 1 Chr.22:6-16

It was inappropriate for David to build this Temple – … `You have shed much blood and have waged great wars; you shall not build a house to My name, because you have shed so much blood on the earth before Me (1 Chr.22:8). In David’s mind, he believed that nothing should be spared in order to make this Temple the envy of the nations. He wanted it to reflect the greatness of his God. Therefore, he amassed a small fortune of the best materials with which to build this Temple.

Q.3. How would God prosper Solomon? What key advice did David give to Solomon? – (1 Chr.22:11-13, 17-19)

The clear choice of Solomon by God was no mistake. It sent a clear message of God’s grace. Solomon was the son of Bathsheba, an adulteress. Bathsheba was also included in the genealogies. This again demonstrated that the Saviour of the world is the Saviour of sinners (Mt.1:6 & 21). God had intentions to establish David’s kingdom forever (1 Chr.22:10). However, Solomon’s success depended on his obedience – 12 The Lord give you discretion and understanding, and give you charge over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13 Then you will prosper, if you are careful to observe the statutes and the ordinances which the Lord commanded Moses concerning Israel (1 Chr.22:12-13).
