2 Timothy 2:14-26
Q.1. How could Timothy safeguard the truth? What was the heresy of Hymenaeus and Philetus? – (2 Tim.2:14-18)
Hymenaeus had drifted from the prophetic word and had become shipwrecked. He and Philetus taught – that the resurrection had already taken place and they upset the faith of some (2 Tim.2:18 c.f. 1 Tim.1:18-20). Timothy was to avoid wrangling with words and getting caught up in controversy (2 Tim.2:16). Rather, he was to – Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth (2 Tim.2:15). In a day of much apostatizing, this should challenge us all to depend on the protection afforded by God’s revelation.
Q.2. Can we be sure that those who profess faith are children of God? What characterizes true children of God? – (2 Tim.2:19-21)
Jesus told us that many would receive the Word with joy and yet fall away particularly in the Endtimes (c.f. Mt.13:20-22; 24:10-12). We may find it hard to know who is a true believer. God has no such problem – nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal … The Lord knows those who are His (2 Tim.2:19). God does the choosing and He alone sees accurately. However – Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness (2 Tim.2:19). The sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit unceasingly cleanses and changes us into the image of Christ. That ensures that we may be – a vessel for honour, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work (2 Tim.2:21).
Q.3. What advice did Paul give Timothy regarding keeping true to his calling? – (2 Tim.2:22-26)
Paul firstly challenged Timothy to – flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart (2 Tim.2:22). He again repeated that Timothy needed to patiently teach the Truth and to avoid quarrels and speculations (2 Tim.2:23-24). In this way sinners may repent and come to their senses and escape the snares of the devil (2 Tim.2:26).
