Jeremiah 50:21-46
Q.1. Why was God about to punish Babylon? What attitude of heart brought His judgment upon the nation? – (Jer.50:21-32)
God declared – Do according to all that I have commanded you … I have set a snare for you and you were caught, O Babylon … because you have engaged in conflict with the Lord (Jer.50:21, 24). Why was God coming against Babylon? God spelled out their offense – Repay her according to her work; According to all that she has done, so do to her; For she has become arrogant against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel … Behold, I am against you, O arrogant one … For your day has come, the time when I punish you (Jer.50:29, 31). As James declared – God is opposed to the proud but He gives grace to the humble (Jms.4:5-6).
Q.2. What caused God to act against a nation? Who is responsible for justice and judgment? – (Jer.50:33-34, 44-46)
God is for His people Israel, and those who revere Him. Babylon had oppressed Israel, but – Their Redeemer is strong, the Lord of hosts is His name; He will vigorously plead their case, so that He may bring rest to the earth, but turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon (Jer.50:34). God will use other nations as He had used Babylon – Behold, a people is coming from the north and a great nation and many kings will be aroused from the remote parts of the earth (Jer.50:41). Nonetheless, it is God Who executes judgment – For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court? Who then is the shepherd that will stand before Me? Therefore, hear the plan of the Lord which He has planned against the land of the Chaldeans … (Jer.50:45).
