GOD PUNISHES THE MOABITES BUT NOT FOR EVER.

Jeremiah 48:1-47

Q.1. For what attitudes and actions was Moab to be brought down? What is the lesson for us? – (Jer.48:7, 26, 29-30, 42)

Jeremiah documented God’s case against Moab – You trust in your own achievements and treasures … he has become arrogant toward the Lord … I know his fury … Moab will be destroyed from being a people because he has become arrogant toward the Lord (Jer.48:7, 26, 42). Moab was filled with pride, and self-exaltation (Jer.48:29). They had also acted like a bully because of their power – I know his fury, declares the Lord (Jer.48:30). Moab was a Gentile nation, so therefore God’s action against Moab will be applied to all nations who display the same pride and arrogance against the sovereign God.

Q.2. How extensive will Moab’s destruction be? Why will God change the fortunes of Moab? – (Jer.48:1-16, 35-39, 44, 46-47)

God listed off the cities of Moab (Jer.48:1-5, 21-25). None will escape His judgment – I will make an end of Moab, declares the Lord (Jer.48:35 c.f. Jer.48:1-9). Moab will be ashamed of the impotence of their god Chemosh (Jer.48:7, 13, 46). Ruth was a Moabitess included in the lineage of Jesus through King David’s line (Ruth 4:7-22; Mt.1:5). Moab will not be overlooked for blessing – Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days, declares the Lord (Jer.48:47). God is a God of grace.
