Jeremiah 46:1-28 & 47:1-7
Q.1. Why was God going to destroy Pharaoh and the people of Egypt? – (Jer.46:1-25)
God made it clear that the day of vengeance was coming to the surrounding nations, at the hands of the Chaldeans. Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, and his people would be destroyed (Jer.46:1-9). This was God’s judgment. It was actually the – day that belongs to the Lord God of hosts (Jer.46:10). God would punish Egypt and all who had trusted in their gods – 25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust in him … Afterwards however, it will be inhabited as in days of old,” declares the Lord (Jer.46:25-26).
Q.2. What encouraging promise did God give to the scattered descendants of Israel? – (Jer.46.27-28)
God had repeated that Judah would be severely punished for all her sins – I will correct you properly and by no means leave you unpunished (Jer.46:28). However, God gave Jeremiah a message of hope for Israel – 27 “But as for you, O Jacob My servant, do not fear, nor be dismayed, O Israel! For, see, I am going to save you from afar, and your descendants from the land of their captivity; And Jacob will return and be undisturbed and secure, with no one making him tremble. 28 “O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the Lord, “For I am with you. For I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven you, yet I will not make a full end of you (Jer.46:27-28). God made this promise, even before Judah was taken into captivity.
Q.3. What would happen to the Philistines and the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon? – (Jer.47:1-7)
God gave Jeremiah a dire prophecy – To destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every ally that is left: For the Lord is going to destroy the Philistines (Jer.47:4 c.f. Jer.47:1-7).
