GOD WILL JUDGE US FOR THE WAY WE LIVE.

Ecclesiastes 11:1-10

Q.1. What approach did Solomon advocate, in order to cope with the uncertainties of life? What attitude should we avoid? Who is in control of the future? – (Ecc.11:1-6)

Solomon was realistic about the uncertainties of life – 2 …for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth – and 3 …wherever the tree falls, there it lies (Ecc.11:2-3). For that reason, he advocated sharing generously with others as we go through life (Ecc.11:1-2). We should avoid being over cautious, but rather -Sow your seed in the morning and do not be idle in the evening, for you do not know whether morning or evening sowing will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good (Ecc.11:6 c.f. Ecc.11:4). In spite of all his wisdom, Solomon understood man’s limitations, and observed – Just as you do not know the path of the wind and how bones are formed in the womb of the pregnant woman, so you do not know the activity of God who makes all things (Ecc.11:5). He knew clearly that life is under God’s ultimate control.

Q.2. What attitude to life is best? How can we benefit from the trials of life? What perspective should we hold to as we go and grow through life? – (Ecc.11:7-10)

Solomon suggested that it is best to be thankful and happy – Indeed, if a man should live many years, let him rejoice in them all (Ecc.11:8). Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood (Ecc.11:9). However, to benefit from life, it is good to – … remember the days of darkness, for they will be many …(Ecc.11:8). Moreover, we should keep everything in a divine perspective – follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things (Ecc.11:9). He also strongly advised us to resolve conflict – remove grief and anger from your heart and put away pain from your body, because childhood and the prime of life are fleeting (Ecc.11:10).
