HOW THE GOSPEL IS TO TRANSFORM ALL RELATIONSHIPS.

Colossians 3:18-25 & 4:1-6

Q.1. What practical changes does God expect in the families of those who carry His name? Why? – (Col.3:18-21)

Everything we do, and every response we make, should be governed by whether or not we are pleasing God – whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father (Col.3:17). Paul applied this firstly to the relationship between husbands and wives. There will be no irresolvable disputes, if in faith and trust in Jesus, wives submit to their husbands, and husbands love their wives. He is the One Who can help them overcome their negative traits (Col.3:18-19). Children should obey in all things, as this is well pleasing to the Lord (Col.3:20).  Fathers must avoid the risk of discouraging their children. They achieve this by not imposing impossible demands (Col.3:21).

Q.2. What should be our attitude, and on what should be our focus, in all our relationships at work? – (Col.3:22-25 & 4:1)

Paul also addressed work relationships.  There seemed to be more required of hired workers than of the employers. This does not often sit well with those who are the employees. However, the masters were reminded to act with justice and fairness, out of fear of the Lord, because they were accountable to their Master in Heaven (Col.3:22 & 4:1). The guiding principle Paul gave to the church, was – whatever you do, do your work heartily as for the Lord rather than for men (Col.3:23). The servants must work with a view of their reward in Heaven (Col.3:24). A Christian’s service should stand out above those who do not claim to be Christian. Paul warned that there are consequences for wrong attitudes and wrong actions (Col.3:22-25).

Q.3. What attitudes and disciplines contribute toward effective evangelism for a believer? – (Col.4:2-6)

Our impact for Christ is directly related to our dependence upon Him. Consequently, Paul called on them to – Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving (Col.4:2). The Gospel is a mystery that has not been unfolded to most. Paul requested that the Colossians would undergird his ministry – praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ, for which I have been imprisoned (Col.4:3). He wanted them to pray that he would have clarity when sharing the Gospel (Col.4:4). More generally, we need to act with wisdom towards outsiders, and use positive speech, in order to build up and open doors. We must overcome our reluctance to share, and should make the most of our time, and every opportunity (Col.4:5). Only the Lord gives the increase. Our role is to testify, and to leave the response to God (Col.4:6).
