Isaiah 30:1-18

Q.1. Would the planned alliance with Egypt stand? What was Isaiah instructed to do with the prophecy that God gave for Judah? How would this prophecy challenge the nation? – (Isa.30:1-14)

Judah’s leaders had insulted God by seeking protection through an alliance with Egypt, without consulting Him (Isa.30:1-2). However, they would be ashamed when Egypt would fail (Isa.30:3-7). God ordered Isaiah – Now go, write it on a tablet before them and inscribe it on a scroll, that it may serve in the time to come as a witness forever (Isa.30:8). He said of the nation – For this is a rebellious people, false sons, sons who refuse to listen to the instruction of the Lord (Isa.30:9). They had the audacity to try to silence the prophetic warnings (Isa.30:10-11). Sadly, they would be utterly smashed like a broken pot (Isa.30:12-14). The prophecy would stand as a witness to future generations.

Q.2. What promise had God given His people? Were the leaders willing to listen? What did God wish to convey to Judah?  What does this convey about God? Do His promises still apply? – (Isa.30:15-19)

God had made a generous offer – For thus the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said, “In repentance and rest you will be saved. In quietness and trust is your strength.” (Isa.30:15) However, the people of Judah were not willing to take up the gracious offer. They preferred their own flawed plans that would fail (Isa.30:15 c.f. Isa.30:16-17). God again opened His heart to His Covenant people. He gave a promise that a future remnant would receive – the Lord longs to be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him (Isa.30:18). God would respond to the cry of a future generation – O people in Zion, inhabitant in Jerusalem, you will weep no longer. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you (Isa.30:19). God must deal with sin, but His heart towards His people is overwhelmingly gracious. This same grace is extended through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to all sinners (c.f. Rom.8:28-39; 11:25-32).
