Proverbs 1:8-19
Q.1. Why should we listen to the instruction of our parents? How valuable is their teaching? Why should we heed their warnings? – (Prov.1:8-10)
Solomon urged his son to heed his instructions, and also his mother’s teaching (Prov.1:8). This was not intended to give parents an unfair advantage, but for children to benefit from their experience and wisdom. A relationship built on trust would also provide protection – My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent (Prov.1:10). These instructions were built on the premise that almost all parents have a vested interest in the success of their child. However, this protection is lost by children who have no respect for their parents.
Q.2. What was Solomon’s advice about cultivating the right friends and avoiding wrong associates? How can we identify those to avoid? – (Prov.1:10-19)
Solomon went into detail about the style and strategy of troublemakers who can cause damage to children and teens. They promise much but produce little (Prov.1:11-14). He advised that the best policy is to stay away from such rebels – My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path (Prov.1:15). He knew from experience where these plans lead – 18 But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives. 19 So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence; It takes away the life of its possessors (Prov.1:18-19). The lesson is clear. Choose friends who will build you up and bless you. Also, avoid those who will destroy your life. It is wiser to not seek popularity with the ungodly who pursue a life of sin. You will identify them by their fruits, and the low level of respect they show toward those who have authority over them.
