Isaiah 27:1-13
Q.1. Whose judgment was Isaiah detailing? How would God deal with Israel at this time? How would God deal with the enemies of Israel? What change did God foreshadow? – (Isa.27:1-13 c.f. Rev.12:7-12)
God was foreshadowing what would happen in the future – in the days to come (Isa.27:6) – in that day (Isa.27:1,2,12,13). The descriptions suggest that this is still future because it has not happened yet. The themes are taken up in other parts of Scripture, where it is describing the last days. The chapter begins with the final overthrow of Satan, which is documented in Revelation in similar terminology – In that day the Lord will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, with His fierce and great and mighty sword, even Leviathan the twisted serpent; And He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea (Isa.27:1 c.f. Rev.12:7-12; 20:2). Revelation confirms the Old Testament prophecies of the reign of Israel’s Messiah, Who will defeat and bind up Satan (Rev.20:1-6). God promised to bless Israel at that future time – In that day … I, the Lord, am its keeper; I water it every moment. So that no one will damage it, I guard it night and day … In the days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will blossom and sprout, and they will fill the whole world with fruit (Isa.27:3 & 6). God will destroy all of Israel’s idolatry – Therefore through this Jacob’s iniquity will be forgiven; And this will be the full price of the pardoning of his sin (Isa.27:9). However, firstly God will chastise His erring people – For they are not a people of discernment, therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them, and their Creator will not be gracious to them (Isa.27:11). Then Isaiah spoke of the future, when Israel would be back in the land – 12 In that day the Lord will start His threshing from the flowing stream of the Euphrates to the brook of Egypt, and you will be gathered up one by one, O sons of Israel. 13 It will come about also in that day that a great trumpet will be blown, and those who were perishing in the land of Assyria and who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come and worship the Lord in the holy mountain at Jerusalem (Isa.27:12-13 c.f. Isa.2:2-3). There will be a miraculous regathering of Israel to the holy mountain at Jerusalem.
