John 7:1-24
Q.1. Why did Jesus seem to mislead His brothers? How did Jesus go to the feast in Jerusalem? Why? – (Jn.7:1-13)
Jesus was avoiding Jerusalem because He was aware that the Jews were trying to take His life. Therefore, when He eventually went up to the Feast of Tabernacles, it was in secret (Jn.7:10). His brothers had insincerely suggested that He should go up to Jerusalem to show off His credentials. John recorded that – not even His brothers were believing in Him (Jn.7:5). Jesus’ response addressed their agenda. He urged them to go to the Feast – 8 Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.” 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee (Jn.7:8-9). Later Jesus did go up to the Feast on His own terms, in order to make a fresh appeal to the Jewish nation.
Q.2. What was the secret of Christ’s impact through His teaching? Why did many people fail to comprehend His message? – (Jn.5:14-24 c.f. Jn.5:8-15)
The Jews were so controlled by their leaders, that none dared address their real thoughts in public, for fear of reprisals. The fact that Jesus made a huge impact is clear. However, Jesus was not satisfied to receive the adulation of the crowds. He declared – … My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me (Jn.7:16). He then explained why some could not receive the truth – 17 If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. 18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him (Jn.7:17-18). The prerequisite for receiving the truth, is a heart that wants to please God, do His will, and seek His glory alone.
