2 Chronicles 27:1-9
Q.1. In what way was Jotham like his father, Uzziah? Did he learn the lessons from his father’s demise through leprosy? – (2 Chr.27:1-2 c.f. 2 Kgs.15:4 & 35)
Uzziah was a reasonably good king in his earlier days. Jotham was about the same. He followed suit with his father and did not remove the high places where the people of Judah were led away from the Lord. However, the isolation of his father from worship had a profound effect upon Jotham (2 Chr.27:2).
Q.2. What made King Jotham’s reign disappointing? What is the reason that Jotham experienced some success in his reign? – (2 Chr.27:2-9 c.f. 2 Kgs.15:4 & 35)
The punishment of leprosy on his father should have prompted Jotham to take stronger measures to restore the worship of God, in the place that God had set aside for that purpose. The people still practised religion away from the designated place at Jerusalem. (Dt.12:5-12). Nevertheless, God was gracious to the king and – Jotham became mighty because he ordered his ways before the Lord his God (2 Chr.27:6). Judah benefited from the tribute paid in silver and produce (2 Chr.27:5). Jotham could have become a great king. Instead, he laid the foundation of a royalty that strayed even further from God (c.f. 2 Chr.28:3-4).
