Numbers 22:1-20
Q.1. Why did King Balak consult the prophet Balaam? What message did God send the prophet? – (Num.22:1-14)
Balak was king of Moab, which was beyond the Jordan, and opposite Jericho (Num.22:1). The Moabites were in great fear, because of – … all that Israel had done to the Amorites (Num.22:2). There was a highly regarded prophet named Balaam at Pethor. Balak sent his chief leaders to bribe him – Now, therefore, please come, curse this people for me since they are too mighty for me; perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed (Num.22:6 c.f. 22:7). When Balaam consulted God, God said to him, – Do not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed (Num.22:12). This reminds us that God’s plans for those in Covenant relationship with Him are under His protection and blessing.
Q.2. What further steps did Balak take to entice Balaam to curse Israel? How did God respond to Balaam? What is the lesson for us? – (Num.22:15-20)
King Balak was used to getting his own way. He redoubled his efforts to bring a curse on Israel. He promised to richly reward Balaam for his services (Num.22:15-17). Though he stated that he would not be bought, and that he was bound to say whatever God commanded, Balaam left the door open (Num.22:18-19). He told the messengers to wait while he re-consulted God. God was angry with Balaam’s waywardness. He warned him – rise up and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you shall you do (Num.22:20). We learn that we are wise to obey God explicitly, and not hold out for God to change His mind about His Word to us, especially when we stand to gain from the activity.
