SOLOMON REINFORCES THE IMPORTANCE OF LIVING BY RIGHTEOUS PRINCIPLES.

Proverbs 3:21-35

Q.1. Why did Solomon urge his son to hold to his teaching? How would these principles bless him? What was the connection between these commandments and God? – (Prov.3:21-26)

God had granted Solomon the ability to gain insight and wisdom from his experiences of life, as He had promised (1 Kgs.3:10-14). As with all parents, Solomon passed these on to his son. Wisdom and discretion earn respect from others and keep us from stumbling. Wisdom gives us the ability to see the relationship between success and failure, blessing and loss, so we will – not be afraid of sudden fear nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes (Prov.3:25). It brings peace of mind, so that – when you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet (Prov.3:24). Parents have been ordained by God to represent Him and heed His precepts, so – the Lord will be your confidence (Prov.3:26).

Q.2. What advice did Solomon give his son about how to treat those around him? What attitudes and people should he avoid? Why should he seek the favour of the Lord? – (Prov.3:27-35)

We should have integrity in our dealings with others, be true to our word, and keep our promises (Prov.3:27-28). We should control our passions: (i) Refuse to plan harm against our neighbours under any circumstances (Prov.3:29-30). (ii) We should not be envious, especially of the gain of violent and crooked operators (Prov.3:31-34). Solomon wanted his son to understand that God will involve Himself in the affairs of people sooner or later – 32 For the devious are an abomination to the Lord; But He is intimate with the upright. 33 The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the dwelling of the righteous. 34 Though He scoffs at the scoffers, yet He gives grace to the afflicted (Prov.3:32-34). The contrasts could not be greater. A person will be known by his choices which will either strengthen or destroy his own reputation (Prov.3:35).
