SOLOMON STARTS HIS REIGN WELL AND IS BLESSED BY GOD.

2 Chronicles 1:1-17

Q.1. How did Solomon reveal his devotion for God? Where did he go for God’s blessing? – (2 Chr.1:1-8)

The people had anointed Solomon to be the king of Israel a second time, after David’s charge to the nation (1 Chr.29:22-25). God established Solomon and exalted him greatly (1 Chr.1:1) The king then gave glory to God for his favour by sacrificing a thousand burnt offerings (2 Chr.1:6). Though David had brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, he still maintained the Tent of Meeting at the high place at Gibeon (1 Chr.16:37-43) that had been constructed by Moses. Solomon did not ignore the place that had been the source of blessing in the past.

Q.2. What did God offer Solomon, and when? What did his response say about the young king? How generous is God?  – (2 Chr.1:6-13)

Solomon had acknowledged God with much devotion. That very night God appeared to Solomon in a dream, and virtually offered him an open cheque. – Ask what I shall give you (2 Chr.1:7). Solomon humbly and selflessly recognized God’s promise of blessing to his father and asked for wisdom to rule God’s people well. God responded generously – 11 … Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honour, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king, 12 wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honour, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you (2 Chr.1:11-12). Solomon started out very well.

Q.3. What did Solomon do with God’s blessing? Did he heed the warnings of the Scriptures and follow his father’s example? – (2 Chr.1:14-17)

Few people can cope with the continuous blessings of prestige, prosperity, and power. For all his wisdom, Solomon was no exception (1 Chr.29:2-5). God had blessed him but he ignored the warnings contained in the Law. These verses record that Solomon disobeyed the very Scriptures that he had written in his own hand. He would have been familiar with Deuteronomy 17:14-20, but he violated almost every principle. His father had amassed wealth to build a temple for God. Whilst building a magnificent temple, Solomon also enjoyed everything with which rulers can pamper themselves.
