Proverbs 6:20-35
Q.1. What advice did Solomon give his son about respect and obedience? What value should a child place on the advice of parents? How can sound teaching bring blessing to a child? – (Prov.6:20-23)
Solomon believed in the dual role of a mother and father. He wrote – My son, observe the commandment of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother (Prov.6:20 c.f. Prov.1:8). Most parents deeply care for their children. They have the benefit of experience and hindsight. However, this is not the only reason why we are urged to obey our parents. Respectful submission to those appointed by God to be in authority over us is essential to our well-being. Such compliance brings guidance, protection, and direction in decision making – For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life (Prov.6:23 c.f. Prov.23:22 & 25).

Q.2. How can parents guard us from a temptress? Why should we avoid such people? What is the cost of involvement with a wayward woman? Does this advice apply to both genders? – (Prov.6:24-35)
Parental guidance can keep us from being trapped by a temptress. Parents have seen the dangers of falling into such temptation. Solomon knew where adultery began. He warned about her ‘smooth tongue’, the ‘capture of her eyelids’, and the ‘hunting of the precious life’ (Prov.6:24-26). He further warned of the danger of fantasizing in your heart, which would lead to sensual, sinful behaviour (Prov.6:25 & 29). Though people may sympathize with a destitute thief, he would still have to pay back sevenfold (Prov.6:30-31). No leniency is extended to the one who commits adultery. He is generally seen as someone who lacks sense, and one who brings disgrace upon himself (Prov.6:32-33). He risks the wrath of jealousy and vengeance from the offended party (Prov.6:34). It is unlikely that any ransom will satisfy those who are offended through adultery (Prov.6:35). Â
