Deuteronomy 28:1-35
Q.1. How significantly would God bless Israel? On what basis was this blessing to be extended? Why would God bless His people? – (Dt.28:1-14)
The blessings would be comprehensive and obvious – 1 “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God (Dt.28:1-2). God would bless them with fruitfulness in their families, and also among their flocks and herds. He would send bountiful rain and would fill their barns with grain. He would do all this and much more to demonstrate that He is a promise keeping God – So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of you (Dt.28:10). As long as they did not turn from Him to other gods – The Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully (Dt.28:13).
Q.2. How would God respond to Israel’s disobedience? What would be the result of the withdrawal of God’s blessing from His people? – (Dt.28:15-35)
Disobedience would invite God’s chastening rod on His people – “But it shall come about, if you do not obey the Lord your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you … “The Lord will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me (Dt.28:15, 20). All their personal, family, and national blessings would be removed. God would remove them from the Promised Land that they were about to enter. They would be devastated until they were destroyed, with no one to save them from calamity. God would abandon them, even as they turned away from Him to other useless gods.
