THE COMFORT AND HOPE OF ABIDING IN GOD’S WORD.

Psalm 119:49-56

Q.1. When were the promises of God’s Word most meaningful to the Psalmist? – (Ps.119:49-50, 52)

The promises of God come to life and brought him comfort in the midst of trials. He called on the Lord to remember His promises in which he had set his hope (Ps.119:49). There are inevitably seasons of winter when God’s Word gives us hope and increases our endurance. Indeed – this is my comfort in the midst of my affliction … I have remembered Your ordinances from everlasting, O lord since these bring me comfort (Ps.119:50 & 52).

Q.2. What attitude did the Psalmist develop toward the ungodly? – (Ps.119:51 & 53)

Criticism and derision were like ‘water off a ducks back’. The Psalmist clung to God’s law – … I do not turn aside from Your law (Ps.119:51). In fact, it burned him up to observe the wicked depart from the Truth (Ps.119:53).

Q.3. What assisted the Psalmist to maintain his awareness of God’s precepts? – (Ps.119:54-56)

Like King David, the Psalmist loved to sing the praises of His Lord. He rehearsed and remembered God’s name day and night (Ps.119:54-55). By keeping God’s Word in the forefront of his daily thought – this has become mine, that I observe Your precepts (Ps.119:56). New Testament believers are also encouraged to follow that same pattern – Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God (Col.3:16).
