THE DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM AND THE SURROUNDING NATIONS.

Jeremiah 25:15-38

Q.1. How did Jeremiah communicate the coming of God’s wrath? How far was God’s judgment extended? – (Jer.25:15-26)

God declared that He would punish Judah by sending her into captivity in Babylon. However, He would also punish all the other nations for their ungodliness (Jer.25:12-14). Jeremiah described how God told him to – Take this cup of wine of wrath from My hand and cause the nations to whom I send you to drink it (Jer.25:15). In a similar vein, John heard God declare about Babylon – Pay her back even as she has paid and give back to her double; in the cup she has mixed … (Rev.18:6 c.f. Rev.14:17-20). Jeremiah recorded that – I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it (Jer.25:17). These nations included Judah and Jerusalem and all the surrounding nations, to the kings of the north near and far (Jer.25:18-26). This prophecy was concerning the near future, plus the distant future spoken of in the Revelation of the apostle John (Rev.14:14-20; 16:17-21).

Q.2. To whom does God’s wrath particularly apply? How does this judgment also foreshadow Endtime events? – (Jer.25:27-38)

God, in righteousness, will punish all who disregard Him. However, the special focus here is on His people and His city – For behold, I am beginning to work calamity in this city which is called by My name … (Jer.25:29). Jeremiah also seemed to foreshadow the Last Days when – the Lord will roar from on high and utter His voice from His holy habitation … against all the inhabitants of the earth … because the Lord has a controversy with the nations. He is entering into judgment with all flesh; As for the wicked, He has given them to the sword. Thus says the Lord of hosts, behold evil is going forth from nation to nation, and a great storm is being stirred up from the remotest parts of the earth (Jer.25:30-32). The remaining description told of a comprehensive judgment from God – Those slain by the Lord on that day will be from one end of the earth to the other … (Jer.25:33 c.f. Mt.24:21; Rev.6:12-17; 9:13-21; 11:15-19; 14:14-20; 16:17-21).
