THE GROOM DESCRIBES THE BEAUTY HE SEES IN HIS BRIDE.

Song of Solomon 4:1-16

Q.1. What was it about his bride that Solomon loved? Was she really perfect? What affect did she have on him? How did his love for her compare with all else? – (Song. 4:1-15)

The wedding day between King Solomon and his bride had taken place (Song. 3:6-11). King Solomon then expressed his love for his bride – How beautiful you are, my darling, how beautiful you are! … (Song. 4:1). We may not relate to his description in this day. A modern bride may not be flattered by being likened to a flock of goats, or newly shorn ewes. Solomon’s love was not just thoughtless words. He went into great detail, extolling the beauty of his bride in every way possible (Song. 4:1-5; 11-15). In his eyes, she was his perfect match – You are altogether beautiful, my darling, and there is no blemish in you (Song. 4:7). This perfection is provided by Christ for His blood-bought Bride, the church (Eph.5:25-27). Solomon was aroused with love for his bride and longed to be alone with her – You have made my heart beat faster, my sister, my bride; You have made my heart beat faster with a single glance of your eyes … (Song. 4:9 c.f. 4:6-8). Her love surpassed all other human experiences – How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils than all kinds of spices! (Song. 4:10).

Q.2. What was the bride’s prayer? What place did God have in her love relationship? How could she bless the king? – (Song. 4:16 c.f. Jn.15:16; Heb.13:15)

The bride prayed for their love to be lifted above the mundane and carnal. The Hebrew word (RUACH) for wind and the Spirit, are one and the same. She called for God’s assistance to lift the intimacy above mere sensuality. All that she was, and all she had, belonged to her groom. She offered herself to him – … May my beloved come into his garden and eat its choice fruits! (Song. 4:16). We have entered into union with Christ, to bear fruit, to give back to Him – You did not choose Me but I chose you and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain … (Jn.15:16). This is the only appropriate offering to bring to the One to Whom we owe everything (Heb.13:15).
