Psalm 140:1-13
Q.1. Why was David crying out to God? How did his opponents operate against him? – (Ps.140:1-7)
David was often under attack from his enemies. Here he recorded his feelings at such a time. His impulse in these trials that loomed large in his mind, was to cry out to God for His protection. David could not relax during these testing circumstances. Not only was he attacked by the schemes of his enemies but he also had blood-thirsty companions, whose first response was to eliminate any opposition, while disregarding the purposes of God (c.f. 2 Sam.16:5-14). David not only needed protection, but also wisdom to do right. He knew just what to do and where to go – 6 I said to the Lord, “You are my God; Give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications. 7 “O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle (Ps.140:6-7).
Q.2. Why did David pray for the destruction of his enemies? What gave the Psalmist confidence in his approach to God? – (Ps.140:8-13 c.f. Rom.12:17-21)
David had a totally honest relationship with the Lord and would share exactly how he felt. Therefore, not everything he expressed was right … but it was honest – “May burning coals fall upon them; May they be cast into the fire, into deep pits from which they cannot rise (Ps.140:10 c.f. Rom.12:19). Once his feelings were in the open, David would confidently wait on God’s intervention – 12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted and justice for the poor. 13 Surely the righteous will give thanks to Your name; The upright will dwell in Your presence (Ps.140:12-13).
