Psalm 118:1-29
Q.1. What experiences drew rich praise from the Psalmist? What conclusion did the Psalmist come to about his God? – (Ps.118:1-18)
The Psalmist was under siege from his enemies and facing death (Ps.118:5 & 17-18). However, he was keenly aware that he was in the hands of his Lord – 17 I will not die, but live, and tell of the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord has disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over to death (Ps.118:17-18). He concluded – 6 The Lord is for me; I will not fear; What can man do to me? 7 The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore, I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me (Ps.118:6-7). Since God had so bountifully answered his prayers, the Psalmist called on all in Israel – Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting … The right hand of the Lord is exalted; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly – (Ps.118:1, 16, 29).
Q.2. In what ways did the Psalmist point forward to the ultimate triumph of the Messiah? – (Ps.118:19-29)
The Psalmist stated a significant prophecy about the Messiah, Jesus. This was used by Jesus and the apostles also, when underscoring Jesus’ triumph over all the enemies of God – 22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing; It is marvellous in our eyes (Ps.118:22-23). It was used to confound the religious leaders when the apostles declared the historical truth that though Christ was rejected by men, He was raised up by the Father in victory (c.f. Mt. 21: 42; Acts 4:11-12; Eph. 2:20; 1 Pet. 2:7).
