THE PURSUIT AND FRUIT OF GOD’S WISDOM

Proverbs 2:1-11

Q.1. In what way did Solomon pass on God’s wisdom to his children? What attitude to truth brings the right outcome for the hearer? – (Prov.2:1-5)

Solomon believed that his words of experience, including his commands, were from God. He encouraged his son to consider that what he was saying was wisdom from God Himself. Though Solomon was a sinner, he took his role seriously. Like all parents, he had a vested interest in the success of his children (Prov.2:1-3). A child must overcome his natural foolishness, in order to acquire wisdom – 4 If you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God (Prov.2:4-5 c.f. Prov.22:15). The heeding of those placed by God in authority over us, will increase our wisdom, and our fear and knowledge of God.

Q.2. From where does wisdom come? To whom is it granted? What fruit will wisdom produce in those who passionately pursue it? – (Prov.2:6-11)

Solomon, as king, had been raised with the Law of Moses, and some of the Psalms. He recognised the source of true wisdom and truth – For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding (Prov.2:6). Wisdom is granted to all who diligently search for her (Prov.2:4-5). For those who seek to be pleasing to God – 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice, and He preserves the way of His godly ones (Prov.2:7-8). The benefits of wisdom are endless – 9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 Discretion will guard you, and understanding will watch over you (Prov.2:9-11). Peter put it this way – If these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:8).
