Psalm 145:1-21
Q.1. Why did David want the people to praise God? What does God do to reveal Himself to sinners? In what way is true worship infectious? – (Ps.145:1-7)
The Psalmist called for Israel to praise God because – Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable (Ps.145:3). There is much for which we can praise God. However, there is also much that requires trust and worship when His ways are unfathomable (Rom.11:33-36). Much in creation speaks of a Designer. There are times in each generation when His awesome acts are revealed (Ps.145:4-7). Each new generation is in an unbroken chain that can either pass on a legacy of faith, or not. There is something infectious and irrepressible about genuine faith (Ps.145:4-7).
Q.2. What qualities about God should be valued? How great is the Kingdom of God? What is the benefit on focusing on God’s kingdom? – (Ps.145:8-13)
David saw the Lord as supreme in every way. What is surprising, is that the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, everlasting God would condescend and be so tender and caring towards all His creatures. He is greater than we can ever conceive – 8 The Lord is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. 9 The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works (Ps.145:8-9). Contrast this with His domain: Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations (Ps.145:13). Godly people recognize the benefits of focusing on His Kingdom, in order to view injustices and the mysteries of life through a divine and eternal perspective – 11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom and talk of Your power; 12 To make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts and the glory of the majesty of Your kingdom (Ps.145:11-12).
Q.3. Which people receive God’s special attention? What blessings are extended to those who wait on God? – (Ps.145:14-21)
The Lord provides and cares equally for all whom He has made (Ps.145:15-16 c.f. Mt.5:45). However, He has a special place in His heart for the needy and defenceless – The Lord sustains all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down (Ps.145:14). Moreover, He gives special attention to His own children – 18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. 19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and will save them. 20 The Lord keeps all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy (Ps.145:18-20). Lord, thank You for giving me a heart to seek You and to know You.
