Proverbs 13:17-25
Q.1. Why should a messenger be faithful? How should we respond to discipline? Who should our companions be? – (Prov.13:17-20 & 24)
A wicked messenger will end up with strife, whereas – a faithful envoy brings healing (Prov.13:17). The willingness to receive discipline and instruction is crucial as a foundation for success in life. God disciplines those whom He loves. He has also given responsibility to parents to do the same because – poverty and shame will come to him who neglects discipline. But he who heeds reproof will be honoured (Prov.13:18 c.f. Heb.12:4-11). Bad behaviour should not be allowed by parents, since – he who withholds the rod of correction actually hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines his son (Prov.13:24). We are advised to have the right heroes to emulate, because they will influence us toward good – he who walks with wise men will be wise … (Prov.13:20 c.f. Prov.13:19-20).
Q.2. What insights were given about prosperity? How important is discipline? Why are some people left needy? – (Prov.13:21-25)
We are challenged to live a godly life because – the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity (Prov.13:21). In fact, the righteous will gain what sinners have stored up for themselves, so that – a good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children (Prov.13:22 c.f. Ps.37:25). Solomon also spoke of the poverty that comes as a result of injustice and wicked living (Prov.13:23 & 25).
