1 Chronicles 9:1-44
Q.1. Which tribes settled in the citadel of Jerusalem? Why did the priests locate themselves around that city? – (1 Chr.9:1-9)
The birth of the nation from Moses had culminated in their possession of the Promised Land. However, Israel had repeatedly betrayed her Covenant with God. In accordance with the message of their prophets, Judah was carried into exile to Babylon – for their unfaithfulness (1 Chr.9:1). Here we are given the general list of the returnees (c.f. Neh.11:1-9). Besides the priests, David had appointed the Levites and Temple servants to be rostered on Temple duties (1 Chr.9:2 & 22; Chpts.25 & 26; Lk.1:8-9). Jerusalem was the territory of Benjamin. Along with a large contingent from Judah, also some from Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh also returned to live in Jerusalem (1 Chr.9:3-9 c.f. Ezra 1:5-6; 8:1-20).
Q.2. What were the roles of the priests and Levites? What legacy did Phinehas pass on to his descendants? – (1 Chr.9:10-34)
The priests, Levites, and temple servants located themselves around Jerusalem for convenience in order to fulfil their rostered duties at the Temple in Jerusalem. Some were drawn to the city for business. It also records the six priestly families (1 Chr.9:10-13), the Levites (1 Chr.9:14-16), the gatekeepers (1 Chr.9:17-27), and temple servants who – were appointed over the furniture and utensils of the sanctuary … over the fine flour and wine and oil and frankincense and spices (1 Chr.9:29 c.f. 1 Chr.9:28-32). In summary – these are the singers, heads of fathers’ households of the Levites, who lived in the chambers of the temple free from the service; for they oversaw the work day and night (1 Chr.9:33). It is written about the zealous priest, Phinehas – he was ruler over them previously, and the Lord was with him (1 Chr.9:20 c.f. Num.25:10-13).
Q.3.? Why was the genealogy of Saul repeated? – (1 Chr.9:35-44)
The genealogy of Saul in 1 Chr.9:39-44 is a repeat of 1 Chr.8:33-38 that introduces the record of Saul’s death.
