Romans 12:9-21
Q.1. What qualities should characterize the relationships between the members of Christ’s body? What actions should we avoid and which ones should we embrace? What place should we give to praying? – (Rom.12:9-13)
Love should characterize all our relationships. Paul explained how this works in practice, both positively and negatively – 9 Let love be the real thing. Shun what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another as brothers do; give preference to one another in honour (Rom.12:9-10). Believers are to be enthusiastic in their service, as well as generous and hospitable (see Rom.12:11 &13). We should never give up, even in tribulation, but rather rejoice in the hope of sharing the glory of God. All of this should be undergirded and energized by persistent praying (see Rom.12:12).
Q.2. How should we treat those outside the faith? What underlying attitude should we cultivate toward others? Can we always be reconciled? Why should we avoid retaliation? – (Rom.12:14-21)
Paul also addressed how the believer is to live in a hostile world. We should return a blessing, even to those who persecute us (see Rom.12:14 c.f. 1 Pet.3:8-9). We can build bridges by showing empathy to those around us, and by being willing to associate with those less fortunate, while maintaining an attitude of humility (see Rom.12:15-16). Paul understood that it is not always possible to resolve every conflict, but exhorted us – if possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men (Rom.12:18). We should refuse to pay back evil for evil, but instead allow God Who is always just, to bring vengeance (see Rom.12:17 & 19). We should always – … Respect what is right in the sight of all men (Rom.12:17). This includes ministering to our enemies and not giving way to temptation. Rather – Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good (Rom.12:21). Love will overcome many sins and conflicts.
