Song of Solomon 3:1-11
Q.1. How did the absence of Solomon affect the Shulamite? What action did she take to resolve her longings? How did Solomon reveal his love for her? – (Song.3:1-5)
The Shulamite maiden was missing Solomon intensely. She searched for him in all the places where he might be (Song.3:1-2). She even asked about his whereabouts from the watchmen of the city. Her search paid off, for – Scarcely had I left them when I found him whom my soul loves; I held on to him and would not let him go until I had brought him to my mother’s house, and into the room of her who conceived me (S of S 3:4). Solomon reciprocated with love and care. His only concern was that she should be refreshed, as much as it pleased her (Song.3:5).
Q.2. How was Solomon’s wedding day announced? What are we to make of this account? How should his subjects have responded to such an auspicious occasion? = (Song.3:6-11)
This scene portrayed Solomon as coming for his bride and returning to his palace in Jerusalem (Song.3:6-11). It was announced by the daughters of Jerusalem, who were all enthralled by Solomon’s pre-eminence. It is best considered as the excitement of a royal wedding of a king and queen. The record described sixty mighty men – attendants of the groom, accompanying the travelling carriage that protected his magnificent entourage, as they collected the bride – Go forth, O daughters of Zion, and gaze on King Solomon with the crown with which his mother has crowned him on the day of his wedding, and on the day of his gladness of heart (Song.3:11 c.f. 1 Kgs.1:32-40). We too should anticipate the glorious day, when we partake of the marriage supper of the Lamb as the Bride (c.f. Rev.19:7-9).
