Luke 12:22-48
Q.1. Why is it not necessary to worry about life’s basic necessities? – (Lk.12:22-32)
Jesus addressed the basic necessities of life, such as our food and clothing. He challenged us to trust God and to not be consumed with worry, as are those who do not regard Him. He reminded His hearers about God’s care and provision for the birds of the air, and the grass and flowers of the field. These are all magnificently adorned by Him. Jesus reminded us that to seek the Kingdom of God is far more important than to worry about life’s basics. He also said that by worrying about it, we do not have the capacity to change the length of our lives by even one hour. He stated – your Father knows that you need these things … for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom (Lk.12:30 & 32).
Q.2. How should believers view their possessions? Why? – (Lk.12:31-34)
We should focus above all else on seeking His Kingdom. We must face the truth that – where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Lk.12:34). Jesus advised that we should be willing to part with our possessions in order to add to our treasure in Heaven where it cannot be lost (Lk.12:33).
Q.3. How should the return of Christ impact our present lifestyle? – (Lk.12:35-44)
We should live with the anticipation that Christ could return at any time. Jesus illustrated this truth with a parable of a master and his servants – Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you that he will gird himself to serve and have them recline at the table and will come up and wait on them (Lk.12:37). The return of Jesus has been the expectation of the Church down through the ages. This has kept God’s people from becoming earthbound. Jesus urged us – You too be ready; For the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect (Lk.12:40). Jesus will return like a thief in the night and will distribute His rewards to those whom He finds faithfully serving God. He promised to promote all those who have been good stewards of the resources He has given us to work towards advancing His kingdom and His glory (Lk.12:41-44).
Q.4. What attitude should the servant of Christ avoid? What do you make of Christ’s teaching on the coming judgment? – (Lk.12:45-48)
Jesus spoke some stern warnings: There is a constant danger that we become complacent, avoid our responsibilities, and revert to selfish living. Jesus also laid down an illuminating principle of judgment – 47 And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will receive many lashes, 48 but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more (Lk.12:47-48). Believers can only respond, to the degree of Truth that they know. The Scribes and Pharisees were therefore much more culpable (c.f. Jn.9:40-41). This is a sobering reality to all who have had exposure to the Truth. The Truth in God’s Word is for applying and obeying.
