‘WE WILL BOAST IN THE NAME OF THE LORD’

Psalm 20:1-9

Q.1. To whom had David written this Psalm? What was his prayer for them? In what way would this song encourage them? – (Ps.20:1-4)

The Psalms were written to be sung by God’s people. However, this song would have especially appealed to those facing trouble and trials – May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob set you securely on high! (Ps.20:1). It would help them look to God for their protection and victory (Ps.20:2). David encouraged them to believe that their offerings to God, given as an expression of their faith, would be rewarded (Ps.20:3). Mostly, he prayed – May He grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your counsel! (Ps.20:4).

Q.2. Where was David’s confidence during warfare? Did he expect God to give him special treatment? How can this Psalm help you in your spiritual warfare? – (Ps.20:4-9)

David had spent much of his life fighting his enemies. His testimony was clear – I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand (Ps.20:6). He expected the Lord to give His chosen one special protection and aid (Ps.20:9). David had a reputation as an exceptional warrior, right from his youth (1 Sam.17:34-37; 18:7). However, here he stated the reason for his victories – Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God (Ps.20:7). The secret we learn from David is that he was committed to God’s cause (not the other way around c.f. Josh.5:14). When we are committed to God’s cause and His glory, we can expect Him to empower and protect us.
