2 Timothy 2:1-13
Q.1. What strategy for ministry did Paul pass on to Timothy? How did Paul underscore this truth? – (2 Tim.2:1-7)
Timothy had been brought to Christ through Paul, and as such was ‘my son’ in the faith (2 Tim2:1). Paul had modelled a life and ministry that sought to invest in those with him. He urged Timothy to multiply his effectiveness by – entrusting the things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses to faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Tim.2:2). He illustrated this from three examples – a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. A soldier was prepared for hardship and avoided distraction, in order to please his master (2 Tim.2:3-4). An athlete was expected to train diligently, to qualify for the Games and ultimate glory (2 Tim.2:5). It would be unthinkable for a farmer to toil without enjoying the fruits of his labours (2 Tim.2:6). All these pursuits illustrate the demands and qualities required of a follower of Christ (2 Tim.2:7).
Q.2. Why was Paul prepared to suffer hardship for the sake of the Gospel? – (2 Tim.2:8-10)
Like his Master, Paul was more than ready to suffer hardship, including prison and persecution, for those he sought to reach for Christ (2 Tim.2:8-9). However, Paul was under no illusion about the fruits of his labours – For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with-it eternal glory (2 Tim.2:10). He knew that of all who heard, God would touch those – who were chosen … and all these would obtain salvation and go on to eternal glory. Paul rested in God’s wisdom in bringing people to Himself.
Q.3. How does the Lord support and inspire His servants? – (2 Tim.2:11-13)
The apostle highlighted certain unbreakable principles on which he built his ministry. They all related to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Who cannot change – 11 … For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; 12 If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us; 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, FOR HE CANNOT DENY HIMSELF (2 Tim.2:11-13). To come to Christ will ensure that we will live with Him forever. Endurance in the service of Christ will bring with it the blessing of reigning with Him. The faithful can expect God to keep all His precious promises, right through eternity.
