‘YET YOU HAVE NOT RETURNED TO ME’, DECLARES THE LORD.

Amos 4:1-13

Q.1. What was God’s complaint against Israel? How had He sought to bring His people back? What was God’s theme-song? How would God show His greatness? – (Amos 4:1-13)

The people of Israel were committed to their religiosity. They loved going through the motions of bringing their offerings to God. However, God was outraged by their oppression of the defenceless. He singled out the women for their drunken misconduct, and failure to keep their husbands true to God (Amos 4:1 & 4-5). It is a terrible thing when women give up their sanctifying role which they can have on their families. God’s recurring theme after describing Israel’s failure to respond to His chastisement, was – Yet you have not returned to Me, declares the Lord (repeated 5 times in Amos 4:6, 8-11). He then delivered a notice of judgment against the sins of the nation – 12 “Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.” 13 For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness and treads on the high places of the earth, the Lord God of hosts is His name (Amos 4:12-13). A time is coming upon Israel, when they will have to acknowledge that they are dealing with God. The nation has acted as if they could do as they pleased, but they need to understand that they are dealing with the God Who created heaven and earth.
